Art has always been an interest of mine and I remember as a child always wanting to make something or do something. I have strong memories of winning a competition when I was five or six after making a collage of a train as well as another clear memory of an image of an owl that I created when I was about 11. This interest took me to study at college and complete an BDes (hons) in Constructed Textiles at university and go on to become an art teacher where I taught secondary art for 11 years before having a change of career to be coming art therapist.
As an art psychotherapist and artist I truly believe in the therapeutic benefits of arts and creativity in improving emotional and physical well-being. I have experience working in a variety of settings with different age groups including children and adolescents and their families and adults.
I qualified as an art psychotherapist after completing an MA in Art Therapy at Derby University in 2016.
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that uses creativity as a way of supporting people to explore and express their thoughts feelings and experiences. By creating images and making use of a range of art materials art therapy clients unlock subconscious processes to develop new ways to express themselves gain insights and manage emotions.
Since qualifying I have continued to work with children and young people to build on my previous experience as a secondary art teacher.
I have a great deal of experience working with children and adolescents and their families where there have a range of presentations within the mental health sector. I am a member of BAAT (British Association of Art Therapists) and am registered with HCPC (Health Care Professionals Council) which means following procedures and guidelines to ensure effective and safe clinical practise.
In order to truly meet the needs of my clients and for therapy to be most effecting I value combining different therapeutic interventions including Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) Emotional Change Therapy (ECT) and Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP).
As an artist my work has evolved quite a lot over the years with much experience in textiles and clay and then evolving into expressive mixed media paintings. I have a range of art for sale on my website as well as some in my Etsy store.
